Opposing Changes in the Functional Architecture of Large-Scale Networks in Bipolar Mania and Depression
Manic and depressive phases of bipolar disorder are characterized by opposite patterns of symptoms. In this work, we investigated and characterized different spatial and temporal features of intrinsic brain activity in bipolar disorder by using resting-state fMRI. We detected distinct patterns of brain network alterations in mania and depression, which may underlie their opposite symptomatology. The results of this study may yield novel insight into the relationship between alterations in intrinsic brain activity and psychopathology.
