All roads lead to the motor cortex: psychomotor mechanisms and their biochemical modulation in psychiatric disorders
Psychomotor alterations represent a core feature of psychiatric disorders. In this work, we described and discussed potential neural correlates of alterations of psychomotor activity in bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and schizophrenia. Alterations in intrinsic brain activity within the brain’s motor circuit, as well as its abnormal modulation at subcortical, network, and global levels, may reflect in correspondent psychomotor abnormalities that operate in a dimensional way, cutting across the different psychiatric disorders. This may have diagnostic and therapeutic ramifications, providing potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in psychiatry.
