Abstract:

Nearly every cell in the body and brain contains the molecular machinery to generate daily rhythms in physiology.  These cells must synchronize to each other and to the local light cycle to coordinate daily rhythms in metabolism, hormone secretion, and behaviors like sleep and wake.  This talk will review the evidence for how circadian cells synchronize to each other and the light cycle in mammals and will focus on recent results revealing a network that controls daily rhythms in corticosteroid release.
