Abstract:

Insomnia and depression are associated with sympathovagal imbalance of the autonomic nervous system or cortical hyperactivation, as well as impaired functional connectivity. Neurofeedback or biofeedback offers a platform to visualize the dynamic fluctuations of physiological signals, empowering individuals to engage in self-training for intervention. Moreover, self-training techniques can also be a useful tool to uncover the interplay between sleep, mental, and brain health. This closed-loop approach encompasses data streaming, feedback delivery, cognitive processes, and feedback re-computation over time. To improve patient motivation and engagement, the utilization of a gamified brain-computer interface for actively self-training and enhancing clinical treatment efficacy for insomnia and depression is promising. This innovative approach may facilitate the translation of scientific findings for the general population and promote sleep, mental, and brain health on a broader scale.
