2024 GIMBC Explore Taipei: Cultural Trip, Longshan Temple
Our journey began at Dong San Shui Street / Xinfu Market, the intersection of two of Taipei’s oldest traditional markets. Students and faculty spent the afternoon sampling a wide variety of local delicacies. We passed by a popular fish ball stall where the friendly vendor offered us some fried burdock. It was incredibly crispy with no bitterness at all. We also discovered some traditional Taiwanese treats: caozai rice cakes and red tortoise cakes (hong mian gui).
We then strolled through the lively market streets, making our way to Bopiliao Historic Block, Longshan Temple, Huaxi Street and Qingshan Temple. Immersing ourselves in the rich history, cultural heritage, and unique architecture of these iconic landmarks, we became acquainted with the evolving landscape of historic Taipei. The tour concluded at a century-old Taiwanese tea house where we enjoyed the delicate flavors of local “tie guan yin” tea and the deep history behind Taiwan’s renowned tea culture. This cultural journey not only deepened our understanding of Taiwan’s traditions but also gave us a greater appreciation for the local history and its people.
