Abstract:

Cortical lamination is characteristic of the mammalian neocortex. The earliest born neurons form the deepest layer, of which only a minor proportion of its constituent neurons remain as the brain matures. These remnant neurons are heterogeneous in terms of cell morphology and gene expression. More interestingly, these deep-layer neurons extend their axons to specific cortical and subcortical sites, which substantially contribute to functional cortical circuitry development and organisation. However, factors that determine deep-layer neuron axon projection patterns and targets are largely elusive. Thus, it is important to carefully characterise these deep-layer cortical neurons in order to better understand their roles underlying circuitry orchestration within and beyond the cortex.
