2026 Clinical Psychology Annual Conference

The Therapeutic Elements That AI Cannot Replace (I): From Neuroscience to Relational Translation

At the 2026 Annual Conference of the Taiwanese Clinical Psychology Association (TCPA) and the workshop organized by the Chinese Ericksonian Society of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy, Professor Hui-Chuan Chang from the Taipei Medical University Graduate Institute of Mind, Brain and Consciousness (GIMBC) presented:

The Neuroscience of Hypnosis: Brain Activity and Neural Mechanisms Underlying Hypnotic States

The presentation focused on brain activity and neural mechanisms associated with hypnotic states, seeking to establish a stronger physiological foundation for experiential and relational approaches in psychotherapy. Integrating neuroscience with the Ericksonian concept of “utilization,” the talk explored how psychotherapy may respond to the challenges of the AI era through contextual understanding and therapeutic relationships.

Professor Chang also shared recent findings from hypnosis case analyses. Both subjective questionnaires and objective eye-tracking measures supported the observation that when individuals are instructed under hypnosis to forget specific content, they may genuinely experience forgetting.

The workshop, themed “The Therapeutic Elements That AI Cannot Replace,” examined psychotherapy in the AI era from multiple perspectives, including neuroscience, Ericksonian hypnosis, embodied experience, and therapeutic relationships. Discussions focused on relational processes, synchronization, and clinical practice in psychotherapy.

The program also addressed topics such as neural mechanisms during hypnosis, improvisation and bodily resonance in therapy, as well as relational approaches in child psychotherapy, demonstrating interdisciplinary perspectives in contemporary psychotherapeutic practice.
